CNH Combines: One Company Two Combines |
|
This fall it looks like the new 1/64 CaseIH AFX 8010 combine will be finding a home on many farm displays and collectors shelves. This new combine toy from Ertl is one of the nicest replicas from Ertl to date. The AFX 8010 is a collectors edition with hand rails, flashers, mirrors and light detailing. A plain shelf model will follow in December 2003. The AFX 8010 combine is an advancement of the IH Axial-Flow design first released in 1977. This ultra modern combine offers a 375 hp engine with a 25 hp rise and 40 hp unloading power boost. The AFX is best suited for big 30ft harvest heads with its 330 bu class 8 combine grain bin. Many collectors may think the AFX is a red version of the 1/64 New Holland CR 970 released last year in conjunction with the CNH dealer introduction. The AFX and CR are totally different combines. |
|
The CaseIH and New Holland combines are built at the CNH Combine Plant in Grand Island, NE. While the combines are built on the same assembly line they are totally different. The AFX uses a single rotor to thresh the grain while the CR uses two rotors. The differences extend from there. You will notice above in the toy and real pictures the AFX and CR have different feeder housing. Ertl has detailed this on the replicas. Notice the AFX has black shields on the feeder while CR does not have any shielding

The grain bins are different on the AFX and CR. The AFX bin auger is located on the right center of the bin while the CR's auger is located in the back right.

The rear ends of the AFX and CR are also
different. You will notice that the back of the AFX is enclosed
and squared. The CR is much more rounded and shows the cat walk
on the engine. The CR also has a rear access ladder.
The AFX has light bars for rear hazard lights while the CR verticle block hazard lights. The straw choppers on the two CNH combines are also different. The AFX has two straw spreaders underneath the cowling while the CR has an extended chopper with 6 fins. Looking at the back of the real and toy CNH combines you can see they do not look at all the same. The unloading augers are one of the common components on the CNH combines. The only difference on the toy models is that Ertl corrected the AFX auger to swing upward to clear grain carts and trucks. Past Ertl combines including the 2002 CR 970 just swing out and sit on the cart or trucks wall. |

The engine area on the CNH combines is designed differently. Both combines use Iveco engines. The CaseIH deck is placed higher on the combine and the access ladder is enclosed. The CR deck is deeper and has an exposed ladder. You will also notice the AFX and CR steps to the bin are different. The AFX also has a guard rail placed over the top of the engine. The mufflers on the engines are also different. The AFX's muffler is placed just under the bin next to the unloading auger. The CR muffler extends out the back along side the auger.

The right side of the combines also have many differences. The CaseIH AFX has three body panels noted by two vertical cast lines. The AFX has a return elevator cast underneath. The rotary air screen on the engine radiator in the back is cast in silver plastic with wire detail and actually turns. The CR combine is much more rounded right side panel with a black painted mud flap extending out over the front tire. The air screen is cast into the combine and is smooth.

The left side of the combines also show differences. You can see the bin auger sticking up on the CR and the straw chopper and hazard lights sticking out the rear. You can also see the common unloading augers again as well as the cab steps. The AFX has the rivets on the unloading auger painted in silver. The cab tops are also different. The CR top looks like a hammer head shark and has two warning beacons on the top. The AFX top is rounded out and looks much more like an advanced CaseIH 2300 series cab.

The grain head and the corn heads on the AFX and CR are same. Both are New Holland designed. The toy combines have 30ft grain heads and 12 row corn heads. The CaseIH heads do have model number decals. The CaseIH grain head is a 2020 and the corn head is a 2412. The New Holland heads just have New Holland printed on them.

Ertl gets an A+ on the AFX 8010. Collectors were impressed in July 2002 when the 1/64 New Holland CR 9970 was released with all its detail. Collectors are now excited about the AFX for its detail. What is important to realize is that Ertl did its home work on the toy combines. CaseIH and New Holland combines may be made at the same factory but they are very different. The real combines have different threshing systems and the toys accurately show all of the cosmetic differences.
