Carter and Gruenewalds:
CaseIH Service to Meet the Needs of Young and Old…

This month, Ken Updike from Carter and Gruenewald’s has been kind enough to share
information about the dealership that he works for and the services that they provide.
Carter and Gruenewald’s have tractors for every size farm and have farm tractors on hand
for the collector as well.

Questions:

1.      Ken, how long has Carter and Gruenewald been in business as an International Harvester dealership?
C&G is actually a merger of two old IH dealers.  C&G started in Juda, WI in the 1940's.
Prior to that an IH dealer had been in Juda under other ownership since the early 1900's.  The C&G store that
I work at (Brooklyn...Wisconsin, NOT New York) was also an old IH dealer that can be traced back until at
least the 1930's.  This Brooklyn store was the first IH dealer in WI to earn IH's XL dealer rating (I still have the XL sign).
The Brooklyn store was purchased in 1988 by C&G and has since out grown our original location
in town and moved to a new location at the intersection of hwy 14 & 92.  This was a former Deere dealer location who
went under in the 1970's.  We welcome all travelers to stop by, we are located about 12 miles south of Madison, Wi.
We have a large toy display. We are an old, experienced dealer.

 2.      What other manufacturer's products do Carter and Gruenewald offer?
We sell, IH, STEIGER, NH, BOBCAT, CUB CADET, BRILLION, H&S, WOODS, BRENT-UNVERFERTH, MILLER,
and GLENCOE/FARMHAND brands.

 3.      What services does Carter's provide to the public?
Parts, sales, service, leasing, tractor restoration are services offered to the public

4.  What do you feel has made Carter and Gruenewald a successful dealership, since a lot of dealerships have
disappeared since the 1980's?
We were very conservative in the 1980's.  That helped us get through the farm downturn.  We still tend to be this.
We changed and adapted to our markets (declining dairy, increasing row crop farms and residential/commercial products)
to keep our business viable.  We started an Internet site years before others even thought to do one. We are good at what
we do. We have the largest IH tractor parts site on the net.  We also have an extensive website of farm toys and the
worlds largest website of Cub Cadet parts.

5.      Please describe Carter's Farm Toy services to the public and what the dealership has to offer?
We sell IH, STEIGER, and CNH toys.  We also carry CATERPILLAR, AGCO, BOBCAT, toys and a
large line of New Ray Semi Truck toys.  We offer same or next day (order is processed same day as ordered)
shipments of toy that are in stock. We have flat rate fee shipping charges for all toys.(even pedal toys)  We do
not run limited time "sale" ads just to raise the prices at the end of the month.  We do not have hidden shipping
charges or fees, like some competitors do.

6.      How has Carter's influenced or helped with the book, IH Tractors 1955-1985?
They (C&G) helped with the technical research of the book.  I do the IH books to squash rumors and disprove
falsehoods that exist in the tractor world.  I use only original photos in the books.  I do this to show how the tractors
were made by the OEM, not how someone tried to "restore" theirs.  This is very important.  So many folks claim their
tractor or parts of it are like "original" or "factory"when in fact they are nothing like that at all.  Pictures do not lie.

7.      What special events (fairs, shows, etc) can Carter's been seen at?
C&G attends the local county fairs.  I personally attend both the National Farm Toy show and the Lafayette,
IN toy show.  I go to a few other local toy shows, but have cut back on these recently.

A very special thank you goes out to Ken and to Carter and Gruenewald’s for sharing information about their dealership.  You can visit them on the web at http://www.cngco.com for any further questions that you may have.
