There
has been a lot of talk on ToyTractorShow.com about which Gleaner combines collectors would like
to see from Ertl. This month we
decided to write about the Gleaner combines that Ertl did make.

After the merger of Allis Chalmers and Deutz the R50 Gleaner became
available to collectors. It came
with an interchangeable wheat head and a six row corn head. The R50 was one of
the first combine models to be made in 1/64 scale. The previous John Deere and
International models were 1/80 scale. The R50 is painted in the well known
Gleaner silver and black colors with the addition of Deutz green in the decal
stripes. The model has a small black cab with clear glass to reveal the highly
detailed plastic post which holds the cab and the cab top to the combine. An
opaque grey auger also rotates up for unloading. A Deutz Allis name sticker will
be found on each side of both the wheat and the corn heads. On the rear of the
combine is another large sticker with lights, a S.M.V. sign and the words Deutz
Allis.

To keep with tradition, Ertl introduced the next model after
the Agco merger. The R52 models were made with the same Deutz Allis combine
casting. The one major exception is the cab. The smaller cab on the R50 has been
upgraded to a larger cab on the R52 combine. This model comes with smoke tinted clear glass and offers the
same interior features as the R50. It
features an Agco logo on the side and the green Deutz color has been replaced
with Agco orange. The Deutz Allis
wording was left on the rear sticker and the orange and black sticker on the
heads also have the words Deutz Allis on them.
Another variation of the R52 combine has the words Deutz Allis removed
from the rear sticker. There is no
longer any wording on the wheat or corn heads either.

In 1993, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Gleaner combine, a commemorative R52 combine was produced. A 70th anniversary logo is printed on the top of the combine.

In this
model the opaque auger and cab top have been molded in silver and the sticker on
the back does not have Deutz Allis on it. Wording
has also been removed from the decals on these heads as well.

The latest Gleaner is the C62. The C62 is a larger model than the other
two combines and is also equipped with all wheel drive. It
has the Agco colors, but does not have the Agco logo. It comes with the same
size wheat head as the previous combines, but is fitted with an eight row corn
head instead if the six row head. It
also has the same style cab as the R52. This time, the cab glass is black. The
cab top has also been changed from the plastic top found on the R series models
to a metal top. Gleaner can be found on the rear of the model.
