1/16 Scale Fall Tillage Team
As the harvest ends it is time to till the fields for next spring.  Last month we looked at 1/16 scale combines.  In this issue I would like to continue on with the fall season theme with a perfect tillage team.  There is also follow up piece on the 1/16 CaseIH combines from Scale Models.  My last few articles have covered red toys for the most part. For the December Toy Tractor Times I am going to switch brands to some classic 1/16 models from AGCO that were my favorite releases in 2003.
CaseIH 9370 STEIGER

1/16 Scale CaseIH 9370 by Scale Models

In summer of 1995 CaseIH brought back the Steiger name.  In 1986 Tenneco the parent company of  J.I. Case purchased the Steiger Company.  At this time all Steiger 4wds turned from Steiger green to Case International red.  The Steiger 1000 tractors were replaced by the Case International  9100 series 4wds.  The Steiger name was used on red 9100 series tractors sold through remaining Steiger dealers. In 1989 all Steiger tractors were sold under the Case international name and colors.  From 1989-1994 the 9100 and 9200 series tractors were called Fargo tractors internally by Case.  Steiger 4wds have been built in a factory in Fargo, ND since 1970. In 1995 Case changed its  Ag Line name from Case International to CaseIH.  At the time of the CaseIH change case began promoting its brand names such as Magnum, Maxxum, Axial-Flow, Cotton Express, Cyclo-Planters,  Earth Metal and other trade mark names.  In August 1995 the new CaseIH introduced its 9300 series.   CaseIH proclaimed in its literature, " No name carries more weight in the 4-wheel drive business than Steiger.  For more than 30 years, Steiger set the standard for relentless power.  Unsurpassed quality. And rewarding comfort. That's why we're bringing back the Steiger name with the introduction of the new 9300 series 4WD tractors from CaseIH."   The Steiger 9300 series was popular line for CaseIH and was produced through the fall of 2000 when the STX Steiger line replaced it.

Scale Models produced a 1/16 scale 9370 4wd in the late 90's.  Scale Models has produced Steiger tractors since 1984 when the Steiger CP-1400 was introduced.  The Scale Models 9370 represents the 3rd largest  of seven tractors in the 9300 series. Rated at 360 engine  hp and 310 pto hp the Steiger 9370 represents its name plate well.  It is powered by a six-cylinder Cummins NTA-855-A engine and has a standard 12x3 SynchroShift transmission standard with an optional 12x3 powershift.  9370 has plenty of power for most tillage jobs on the farm.  The Scale Models 1/16 model of 9370 is a great shelf toy.  The model has an open cab showing the detailed interior.  It has 9300 series styling and decal graphics. It is important to note this model has a different casting than the CP-1400.  The 9300 has a much different hood and grille than the CP-1400.  The Scale Models 9370 sells for about $150.

There are two pieces of 9300 series literature.  The first piece came out in 1995 at the launch of the series.  This piece covers the 9380 through the 9330.  The Steiger name is re-introduced in the 1995 piece.  In 1996 the literature changed to cover a variety of new Steigers including a 205 hp 9310, 360 hp QuadTrac and 425 hp 9390.  The cover of the 1996 piece looks the same as the 1995. The 95' piece has a 9380 on the cover and the 96' piece has the new 9390 on it.  Because we are enjoying TTT on-line now I will note the 1996 piece is the first CaseIH 4wd brochure to mention that additional Steiger information can be found on the world wide web at www.casecorp.com

CaseIH ecolo-tiger 530B

2001 1/16 Prestige series John Deere 45 combine

Tillage practices are constantly changing.  In days gone by almost every farm used a moldboard plow to till the land.  As conservation became more and more important in farming plows were parked.  Today have a perfect black field after plowing is not important. Farmers want to put as much crop residue back on top as possible during fall tillage.  One of the leaders in minimum tillage has been DMI.  Best known for its blue implements and Tiger stripe decals DMI was purchased by Case in 1998.  At that time DMI products were still offered in blue and in CaseIH red.  In 2002 the DMI blue models became New Holland/DMI models as part of the CNH brand.  DMI models are a favorite for fall tillage because of soil tilth.  Tilth determines the level of root and plant growth the soil will support.  Compaction caused from the fall harvest limits pore space, air and water in the soil, reducing both root and plant growth and crop yield.  Models like the ecolo-tiger 530B have made DMI famous. The CaseIH 530B manages residue with its industry leading X-disk pattern and controls compaction with 5 parabolic deep tillage shanks equipped with patented tiger points.  The rear disk levl'r is an option that smoothes the shank grooves and uniformly distributes residue.  The 530B is an impressive tillage tool.  Here is Pennsylvania where plowing is still common several farmers are relying on DMI's more and more for corn and wheat field tillage.  A few farms even use 530B's to till under hay.

Ertl surprised collectors last November with the release of a 1/16 CaseIH 530B and New Holland counter part.  The 1/16 530B is a great model. It is best suited for tractors with 150 to 205 drawbar hp.  Ertl added nice details by making the replica raise and lower, tiger point shanks and the rear disk levl'r.  This piece suites the new MX 285 Magnum well but fits the 9370 Steiger.  Often in areas with hard clay or rocky ground a 4wd is best suited for a DMI.  The 530 fits well behind the 9370 or STX 375 and 450 QuadTrac if you want to match it to a 1/16 CaseIH 4wd. The 1/16 9390, STX 375 and 450 dual tires are too wide for the 530B.

CaseIH has not put out a special piece of literature on the 530B.  There are several DMI Soil Management pieces that can be found at CaseIH dealers that include the 530B. Most of these DMI pieces fold open into a poster showing the CaseIH/DMI line.

CaseIH 2366 100K Edition

1/16 Scale CaseIH 100,000th 2366 Axial-Flow

In 1998 CaseIH produced the 100,000th Axial-flow combine.  The combine that earned the special honor was a 2366. In the October issue of The Toy Tractor Times I mentioned in my article that Scale Models produced a model of this combine.  Jason Hasert the owner of TTT has one of these combines in his collection.  The combine is a Scale Models toy but not the decals.  Jason told me that the company that designed the 100,000th ribbon decal used on the 2366 used 10 Scale Models 2388 castings to show executives at CaseIH what the decal looks like.  The only difference in combine from the Scale Models 2388 is the decals. This 2366 100,000th model is rare with only 10 models made. Ertl offered a 1/64 model in 1998 but not a 1/32 version.  Jason sent a picture with the 1/16 2366 parked next to a 1/16 MX 120 Maxxum to show just how large a 1/16 combine is to help enhance my article from last month.

I asked Jason if CaseIH had any literature on the 100,000th Axial-Flow.  Jason told me the only literature that mentions and pictures the special 2366.  It is the 2001 CaseIH Axial-Flow Combines 25 Years of Rotary Leadership brochure.  This literature maps out 25 years of the Axial-flow from the 1st 1460 to the 12 row ready 2388.  The back cover pictures the 100,000th 2366.  Jason also has a video in his collection put out by CaseIH showing the history of the first Axial-flow 1460 and the production of the 100,000th 2366. This video and 1/16 combine are rare finds indeed.
