1586: Big Red Power

The top of the line International 1586 was introduced in
the fall of 1976. It featured a
turbocharged 436 cubic inch six cylinder engine which produced 161 pto
horsepower in the Nebraska tests.
Ertl introduced the toy 1506 in 1977,
with a cab and dual rear wheels. The
1586 was offered in the Ertl line through 1996 and holds the title of the second
longest produced 1/16 Ertl tractor. The 1586 was offered 19 years and is edged out by the
26 year run of the John Deere 5020.

1977 1586 with 56-66 series front tires
The early 1586's had three variations of the front end and wheels. The first 1586 had the plastic 11.00-16 wheels, from the 56 and 66 series. On the next variation the wheels were changed to the riveted hard plastic 14L-16A wheels. The last dual wheel 1586 had the hard plastic front wheels spun on the axle stubs.

General Toy Market 1586 Variations
The 1586 was modified for the general toy market, in 1985, by changing the rear wheels to singles, deleting the cab door, taillight, SMV, and cab roof decal. A loader was added in 1989. Beginning in 1990 the engine casting was altered for loader mounts, on non-loader models. The rear tires were changed from rubber to plastic in 1991. In 1993 the black bucket on the loader models was changed to red.

International 1586's appear to be much more common than other 86 series models because the dual wheel models were produced much longer than the single tire 1086 and ROPS 886. Also the dual wheeled, massive 1586 were a favorite in toy stores. New-in-box dual wheel 1586's sell in the $55 range.

New 2003 Red Power 1486
IH collectors will be pleased to know Ertl has just released a new dual wheel 86 series tractor. The 1486 was not offered in the original offering in 1977. This December for the first time Ertl is offering a 1486. It has row crop spaced duals with the correct outside hub dual and silver trim spindle wheel on the inside. To set the 1486 further apart it is a 1980 Red Power model with RP and branding iron decal. The rubber smoke stack insert from the 70's has been replaced by a hard plastic IH stack with rain cap.
