Red Power of the 1970's
TTT has two themes this month that I will combine in my article. 20 years of TTT and 101 Years of IH.  Although the 2003 TTT tractor is a 1/16 AC 7030 it is the first in a series of 1970's tractors that the magazine plans to offer through 2007.  So you can almost bet we will see an IH in the series.

The Toy Tractor Times has already offered an IH from the 1970's.  In 1996 the TTT Anniversary tractor was the IH 1456.  This model fits my article well. I want to review IH top 2wd in 1970 and in 1979 to high light the Red Power of the 70's.

International 1586

1979 Ertl Blue Print Replica: IH 1586
The top 2wd tractor in 1979 was the 1586.  Introduced in the fall of 1976 the big 1586 offered maximum power for the day with 160 hp. The 1586 is powered with an IH diesel  turbo engine with a 436 cubic inch displacement.  A front-wheel-assist model was even available.

The Pro Ag 1586 tractor's' biggest advancement was its command center cab.  The cab was designed to be a command center combines the engine, transmission, final drive and hitch into an integral unit with automotive control and comfort. The mid-mount design puts the driver a full 1 1/2 feet ahead of the rear axle adding tremendous operator benefits.  The 1586 offers 360 degree visibility.   The safety glass in the 1586 gives a much wider view than in the previous 1566.  The vastley improved cab lighting front and rear allows the 1586 to work late into the night.  The biggest improvement IH put in the 1586 cab was the acoustically insulated interior that creates a wall of quite.  The cab also ushered IH into the computer age.  Plug-in instrumentation allowed the farmer to watch all vital tractor systems.

In 1977 Ertl introduced the 1/16 scale 1586.  This Blue Print Replica offers like-reel steering action on a pivoting wide front axle.  Dual rear wheels were an added fun feature for sand box did in fun.  The Blue-Print Replica 1586 NIB will bring around $50.  Several single tire  variations followed the dual wheel 1586 ending with a loader model in 1991.

IH offered several 86 series brochures. Below is the original U.S. brochure with a 1586 on the cover and the Canadian brochure with a cab view.  Both brochures will bring around $20.  IH also marketed the 1586 and other 86 series tractors under the Western theme of branding.  Magazine ad's like this farm Journal ad.  IH used a branding Iron slogan asking farmers to make International their brand.  Late model 86 series tractors even had the IH branding iron decal on their hoods.

International 1456

1996 The Toy Tractor Times Anniversary Tractor : IH 1456

The 1456 was IH's big tractor at the start of the 1970's.  Introduced in 1969 and offered through 1971 the Farmall 1456 was powered by a 407 cubic inch, six cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine which delivered 131.8 PTO horse power at 2,400 rpm.  With sixteen forward speeds and options such as the new "slant cab" ,  air conditioning and dual tires, the 1456 allowed farmers  to efficiently and economically to tackle any task.

In   l996 The Toy Tractor Times celebrated its 13th Anniversary with a 1/16 International 1456 made by Ertl.   Ertl also offered a 1456 in 1970 replacing the 1256.  The Toy Tractor Times 1456 offered improved detailing with a newly tooled IH cab and plastic grill insert. Today the TTT 1456 will sell NIB for around $70.

IH had several 56 series brochures.  They included the 756, 865, 1256 and 1456.  Cab's were just becoming a popular option on tractors and IH often featured the 1456 with a cab on the cover.  The IH cab in 1970 was more of a shelter from dust and dirt and air conditioning was a welcome luxury.

The decade of the 1970's was a decade of advancement for IH tractors in power, technology and comfort.  The 1586 and 1456 are IH power leaders that are great classics in the red lines heritage.
